Just How Fast is My Internet Connection

Where I live is what can only be described as a valley and a number of factors that I will be explaining below mean that communications seem to be a little bit of an issue. I have a connection to the internet but I am left asking just how fast is my internet connection.

When I first moved in I was delighted to find out that the company that maintain the grounds offer their own phone and internet service and you just call them up and they come round and install it for you. However this comes at a cost and I find out that it is a high cost because it is double that of a standard line and internet connection, half the speed double the price! Hmmm I think not!

So being in an area where I can get one of the new WIMAX (wireless broadband) I call up and they send an engineer who sits scratching his head and tells me there is a mountain in the way. "If its a problem then just move it!" I joke as he heads for the door. So that kills off yet another idea and I am left with the option of a mobile connection using 3G technology.

The 3G technology proves to be a hit but there are a few downfalls, there are times when 3G isn't available and at this time I am left asking just how fast is my internet connection when I don't have my super speed?

I am somewhat gutted to find that my connection is less than that of the old dial up connection after running the speed test so I begin to look around for a way to make that go faster when I don't have my fast connection.

There are ways of making your internet connection faster when you have a slow link but the first thing I had to do was to ask myself just how fast is my internet connection.

Remember how difficult it once was to copy disc-based videogames? There was a time when multiple software titles had to be used, special DVD burners had to be installed, and hours were spent - just to copy one game title. In the past few months, that has all changed with the introduction of special software to make backing up discs, especially those for the hot, new Nintendo Wii, a breeze!

Several months ago, an early version of Game Copy Pro was released. The program was designed to be a one stop shop for users to duplicate any game disc, for any system. The initial release worked on Gamecube, PS2, PS3, Playstation, Gamecube, and Dreamcast titles. In November, Version 2.73 of the program was released, now allowing users to backup Wii titles as well.

So why would you want this software? After all, video game piracy is illegal in most parts of the world. The answer is simple. As technology in video game systems and the programming time required for their games has increased, so has the cost of those games. The delicate surface of the media discs most games are contained on is susceptible to scratches, knicks, and other forms of wear and tear. These mishaps can prove costly, often setting gamers back $70 or more a pop. By copying (also known as backing up) a game you legally own, you can use that game for regular play, thus minimizing the chance of your original becoming damaged.

It is important to note, that Game Copy Pro is not intended for the illegal piracy of copyrighted material. It is important to ensure that you are only replicating discs that you legally own.

Before you connect to the internet at home, by far the most important thing you should have in place is a firewall.

Put simply, a firewall acts as a barrier between your private, home network and the internet. Browsing the web without a firewall is not a good idea, especially if you have personal or confidential information stored on your home computer(s).

There are two kinds of firewalls that, when combined, keep your home network near impenetrable, which means you can be happy in the knowledge that you're pretty well protected when browsing the net.

Firstly, there's hardware firewalls, the most common example of these are built into broadband routers; which more often than not are bundled with broadband provider's packages. There is a wealth of settings that you can adjust on your router, with the more expensive routers offering more sophisticated options; generally speaking though, the default settings will suffice for most home users.

Show them how many people are looking for restaurants in their city on a daily basis. Explain how with a web presence, these people could find YOUR business.

When you approach these business owners, you need to do is carefully, especially if they don't know you. That's why it's always best to start with your local home town and the businesses that you yourself frequent. Restaurants are great. They can always use a couple hundred extra customers a month. If you can show them the potential growth by sharing the search stats you've dug up, they'll be more likely to do business with you. What kind of business?

This is the work part. Why Is Metro Ethernet The Future?

Ethernet is a fairly new type of broadband usually confined to a particular building or dense metro area. Although ethernet technology has been in use since the 1970s within local area networks, it only recently has been in use as a wide area network transmission medium as well.

Ethernet for broadband can be delivered over fiber optic cables installed throughout an entire building (also known as "lit" or "on-net") which can substantially reduce normal provisioning time for clients residing in that building. But the main advantage is that ethernet over fiber can be run at native speeds of 10, 100, or 1000 Mbps (also known as Gig E), which is a major leap forward compared to traditional forms of accessing bandwidth.

In the past, ethernet was just a protocol used to transport the "data", so limitations of the underlying transport mechanism applied. For example Ethernet-over-T1 (via copper) operated at a maximum data rate of 1.544 Mbps, and Ethernet-over-DS3 operated at a max of 45 Mbps. Now because of the fact that new equipment specially made for extending ethernet's range have entered the market, limitations have been significantly reduced or eliminated altogether. It's now possible to augment and lengthen the bandwidth of a fiber lit building by using ordinary copper wires, via a new concept termed as Ethernet-over-Copper (EoC) or Ethernet-over-Serial/DS1 (EoS). This is speculated to revolutionize the industry if/when it becomes widely supported by the fiber carrying telcos. Ethernet provides significant cost savings over SONET, ATM, or Frame Relay circuits, and is the best technology for support of IP applications.

Over time, Metro Ethernet will overwhelm SONET in the MAN/WAN market. Ethernet is cheaper, has better economies of scale and allows for simpler, more unified networks. Ethernet is at the gates, and it's coming in. The market for managed Metro Ethernet services is expected to grow by 30 per cent a year until 2010, when it will top $25 billion worldwide.

Apple's iPod could very well be deemed as one of technology's greatest successes of all time. It is the world's most popular portable music and media player, with total market share peaking at an astonishing 92% in 2004. While this figure has drastically decreased due to increased competition, it still remains as the single most popular portable device the world has ever seen.

Since it's launch in 2001, Apple has sold over 100 million iPods. First thing you should consider if you are a spontaneous traveler is a mobile phone, but obviously not just an ordinary mobile phone like the one's sold for local use, I mean if you're gonna travel to other countries you must pick a phone that supports Global System for Mobile networks in foreign countries. Either an international roaming plan from you U.S. carrier or a local SIM card (subscriber identity module) in the country you're about to visit. If you already have a phone from a US carrier that supports GSM, that doesn't necessarily mean that your phone is a world phone. As you should know, GSM works in different frequencies - GSM 850/900/1800/1900 (each of these numbers represents a different GSM frequency). For a true world phone, it should be compatible and work under all the these frequencies. GSM World has a helpful list that shows which GSM frequencies are supported in nearly every country in the world. The site also provides information on the telecom companies available in each country, plus each carrier's network coverage map. It's a good idea to find out whether your phone supports the GSM frequency for your destination before you hop on the plane. GSM handles voice calls. On the data side, the complementary services are General Packet Radio Service, the faster Enhanced Data for Global Evolution, and several so-called 3G (for third generation, the fastest wireless communications) technologies, of which only Universal Mobile Telephone System has begun to appear in the U.S.

To use a mobile phone abroad, you'll need to subscribe to an international phone plan. Such a plan allows you to call people overseas and receive calls from abroad while you're in the U.S.-albeit at a very high per-minute price. Text messaging your buddy in Calcutta is more economical.

The major nationwide carriers AT&T Wireless, Cingular Wireless, Nextel, Sprint PCS,T-Mobile and Verizon Wireless - offer international roaming service. This means the companies have partnered with carriers in other countries to provide expanded service to U.S. customers. Some regional cellular companies also offer international roaming.

AT&T/Cingular and T-Mobile run on GSM, and Nextel runs on Integrated Digital Enhanced Network. Sprint and Verizon use Code Division Multiple Access. These carriers offer mobile phones that work in Asia, Europe, or other continents, although some handsets operate only in a few countries in a given continent. As with any cell phone service, you may not get coverage in remote areas.

If you're a Sprint or Verizon customer, be aware that your CDMA phone won't work on a GSM network here or abroad; you'll likely need another phone that supports GSM or both CDMA and GSM. Both Sprint and Verizon offer at least one hybrid phone for their globe-trotting customers. For example, Sprint has just announced its first quad-band device, the PCS IP-A790 by Samsung, which supports both CDMA and GSM networks.

Verizon notes that CDMA networks are available in some countries, including the Dominican Republic, Israel, Mexico, Puerto Rico, South Korea, and Venezuela. Verizon customers can use their CDMA phone in these countries, but they should check with Verizon before they travel to make sure overseas service is activated.

Nextel customers can use their Internet-enabled IDEN phones in a handful of countries with IDEN networks: Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Israel, Jordan, Mexico, Peru, the Philippines, and Singapore. Otherwise, they must have a IDEN-GSM hybrid (such as the Motorola T720) in order to roam on GSM networks abroad.

Online Privacy - Guarding Against Cyberstalking

Cyberstalking is the practice of using online resources in order to harass, vilify, threaten or misrepresent others. Stalking does not consist of a single act or incident, but of a pattern of behavior. The victim of such behavior may or may not be aware that they are being stalked. In other instances, the victim's distress over incidents related to the cyberstalking may be a part of the response the perpetrator hopes to accomplish.

Laws against cyberstalking are becoming more common, but there is still often a refusal on the part of law enforcement to perceive stalking, whether electronically or in the physical world, as a serious crime. In fact, except for some rather high profile cases, victims of stalkers were commonly told that nothing can be done unless the instigator commits a crime. Sadly, the same thing is true of cyberstalking. Because each individual act in itself may not be a punishable offense, cyberstalking often goes unpunished.

Another difficulty with taking a case against a cyberstalker to court is the privacy laws themselves in the United States. Finding out information on the internet is ridiculously easy, but at the same time, laws are on the books which prohibit release of and access to information of a secure nature. For example, a telephone number can be used to find a name and physical address. Social security numbers, credit card and banking information even the place of employment and co-worker information can be found by a few minutes search even by someone who is only semi-computer literate.

Sometimes cyberstalkers are accomplished hackers on the internet. They are able to appear to be the victim and can sign up for all sorts of unwanted websites, products and forums. They can cause the legitimate user to be banned from needed sites including their own online banking or credit card information by changing password information. They can harass the victim at work by causing inappropriate purchases such as sex toys to be delivered at the victim's workplace. Pornographic images and other material can be placed on a false website such as MySpace that purports to be created by the victim.

Because state laws for the most part are the ones that are used to prosecute cyberstalkers, they are unevenly applied, with many jurisdictions having no ban on such practices and others are unclear as to wording and consequences. Probably a consistent equitable federal statute regarding the practice of cyberstalking is the best way to provide additional protection to victims. Additionally, better standards and practices from individuals and businesses in securing sensitive information would help prevent leaks of such data.

A recent survey - carried out by a popular broadband advice site - focused on what consumers may want from a next-generation broadband connection. The results showed that net users identified the ability to download high-quality films as quickly as possible as the service that they want most out of next-generation services.

Over 61% of those surveyed rated downloading DVD-quality films as the service that would be considered the most interesting when it came to next-generation broadband. Some 18% of users said they downloaded films, although it was the area of online activity that had the least time dedicated to it.

Of those questioned in the survey, a number of services that would be welcomed as a result of next-generation broadband were identified as a result, including:

Downloading DVD-quality films in 5 minutes

Downloading HDTV programmes on demand

Video conferencing with friends and family using VoIP software

Home surveillance via broadband

High definition gaming services

The survey comes about at a time when the future in the UK is still very much under discussion, with a summit on the subject taking place recently to discuss the issues of getting the UK broadband up to speed with the rest of the world.

In countries like South Korea, around 90% of homes can get cheap connections between 50 and 100Mbps, with online gaming providing one of the biggest drives for such a service. It is unlikely that gaming could drive the UK broadband market, although the services identified in the survey could help drive the demand for faster connection.

Unusually, the applications that attracted the most interest in the idea of next-generation broadband were also identified as those that had the least online time spent on them. It is hoped that the demand for high-definition television and video will drive services in the UK market, helping to justify the need to upgrade existing networks and install new fibre networks - capable of delivering speeds of up to 100Mbps.

There is uncertainty, however, as to the cost of rolling out such a service, along with the issue of pricing - with 60% responding either 'no' or 'don't know' when asked about paying for such services.
