Will The iPod Ever Lose It's Dominating Market Position?
Apple's iPod could very well be deemed as one of technology's greatest successes of all time. It is the world's most popular portable music and media player, with total market share peaking at an astonishing 92% in 2004. While this figure has drastically decreased due to increased competition, it still remains as the single most popular portable device the world has ever seen.
Since it's launch in 2001, Apple has sold over 100 million iPods. This figure is likely to increase with the recent revamp of the entire iPod family, including the addition of a new member -- the iPod Touch. Apple has designed four unique units that blow their competitors out of the water. Not one competing device offers the intuitive navigation and sleek design that the iPod has.
So will the iPod ever lose it's dominating market position? It's highly unlikely. Unless Apple ceases their routine bi-annual revamp of the iPods there will be no other device that will out-sell it. This is largely due to the iPods having such a major impact on our society -- it is a device that is known world-wide and is a social icon to many. Furthermore, car manufacturers are including iPod adapters as a standard feature in their cars.
The iPods success is largely thanks to it's click-wheel. While it is a simple design, no other media player has been able to match the efficiency and user friendly qualities of the click-wheel. There have been attempts, such as the iRiver's vertical scrolling, but none have been able to successfully kill of the iPod.
